| How does one join
Bethlehem? |
| Except for very unusual
cases, the formal process begins when the
candidate comes forward at the close of a
worship service and expresses a desire to
join the church. The minister
introduces the candidate to the
congregation. If the candidate is a
member of another church, the minister
indicates that he or she wishes to
transfer membership by letter from that
church. |
The minister asks all
candidates three questions:
Do you believe that Jesus
Christ died for your sins?
Do you believe the Bible to
be God's Holy Word?
Will you try, to the best of
your ability, to live a godly life each
day? |
| If all three questions are
answered affirmatively, the minister asks
the congregation whether there is a
motion and a second to receive the
candidate into the congregation as a
member. The congregation then votes
on this motion to receive. |
| When the new member is
approved, he or she is asked to accompany
the minister to the front of the church
so that exiting members may welcome them
into the congregation. |
| Any new member who wishes to
be baptized may do so at the time he or
she joins the church. Although the
church does not have a baptistery,
requests for baptism by water immersion
can be accommodated. |
| If the new member is being
received by transfer of letter, the church clerk informs that church in
writing of the transfer. |
|
